In our area, on the Minnesota/Canadian border, there was an "Ice" road that run behind my place and the next town road that could be used about fifteen miles away.
The horse pulled a sled on runners made of six inch logs and at times during the days the farmers would pull barrels of water and actually ice the road. By late winter, the road was thick with ice.
To this day, logging back there, you find horse shoes and parts of wagons and stuff.
