I never much liked cherries. They weren't on our family's list of yummies when I was little - the first time I remember one was when as a small child I bit into a chocolate-covered cherry - and didn't enjoy the surprise at all.

The last time I ate a cherry was in 1966, when I worked in West Berlin. My aged landlady rented me the spare bedroom in her apartment(Berlin in those days suffered a severe housing shortage). One weekend she made a big batch of steamed cherries. Fraulein Elisabeth Strietzel was being generous in the extreme when she offered to share the bowl with me - food there was expensive.

Obligated by courtesy, I took a small amount and sat to share her treat. It was tough going but I got all of mine down after a while. She thought I was pretty odd, anyhow, and the struggle eating the cherries must have been apparent. I complimented her on the cherries and gave profuse thanks.

Her only answer was, "You take the longest time to eat."
