I was considering going to Vegas for the New year. I would appreciate any must "Do's" and "Don'ts." It will be my first time there.

NYE is the biggest day of the year here. It may be difficult or very expensive but try to get a room on the strip. They close the strip early that evening to traffic. If you don't stay on the strip you will have to walk a great distance to and from the strip that night. They also close and lock the doors to the casinos on the strip that night and the only way you are allowed in is if you have a room key to show them.

Wear a fanny pack to keep your money in and keep it under your jacket. Wear comfortable shoes. Not new ones but ones that have already been broken in. You will do a lot of walking and a blister will ruin that.

Drinking alcohol is allowed on the strip out side but not off the strip. Prostitution is legal to advertise but illegal to actually do. Timeshare hackers are everywhere. If someone asks if you are going to be in town tomorrow tell them no .. leaving first thing in the morning. They want to give you some show tickets for free ... but you will regret sitting through several hours of the timeshare presentation and pressured sales pitch.

Don't drive if you don't have to. Traffic here is terrible and the drivers are really bad. Give them an inch and they will try to squeeze their car in. Speed limits and traffic signals are only a suggestion to them.

Budget your money for each day you are going to be here. Nothing worse than running out of money during your vacation. Limit your gambling to as much as you can afford to loose. Believe me you may win once in awhile but in the long run ... you will leave your money here.

Tips are important to the workers here. They depend on them. A buck or two is better than nothing. They aren't looking for the big tipper just the regular ones. Tip and be a good person.

Take in all the free sites to see. They are worth it. The shows are first class here. It will cost a nice penny to go to them. Look for coupons .. they are all over the place for discounts on everything. Take advantage of them.

For things to see and do plus where to eat go to www.vegas.com

Remember Vegas is a town where income is based on tips, called tokes by locals. The dealers' income is based on tips when a person is winning, this includes the change girl. If you use the bellman to carry your bags, the standard is $1 per bag. If you use the valet, then standard is $2 when you pick up your car. Tip the cocktail that brings you free drinks when gambling and you will get more than one freebie; we tip her $1 for two drinks.

You are in the desert so you may be warm during the day but the moment the sun goes down, the temperature seems to drop drastically.

New Years is very crowded. Plan on LONG lines for meals and even to get a reservation (which you should make now). New Years brings in the pick pockets and prostitutes. Prostitution is NOT legal in Vegas. Carry your purse or wallet in a safe place. Don't set the wallet on the counter when checking in or at the casino cage or you could see it disappear.

The prices for rooms at least doubles or more for New Years and most hotel casinos require you have a three-night stay. If you don't have the reservation now, you may not get one or at a decent price.

Don't drink too much because you are in a strange city and it is easy to get lost.

And, if you come, go outside just before midnight to enjoy the free fireworks from most of the Strip casinos.
