Your question is a good one. For most, the WIFI antenna is built into the computer. It is because of that most people have horrible range and signal strength. As a result lots of people have to buy and spend a lot of money on routers cards and computers components. There are $100 computers that have ears that have far better reception than the most expensive computers simply because they have "ears" on the side of the computer screen. Those computers, while inexpensive kick butt on the most expensive computers. Just why computer companies refuse to adopt this simple technology is beyond me. Everyone understands the antenna should be out the outside right-only the man upstairs knows who man refuses to to do it and put it inside his computer

Most laptops have an internal NIC so there is nothing on the outside. If you are using a external card, those may have antennas on them. If you are far away from your router or if you have to pass through many walls between the router and your laptop, this will degrade your signal.

You have concluded that your laptop antenna (built-in) is the problem. It isn't. Read the router User Manual First.

Check your router, it likely isn't configured properly OR it isn't in the optimum location in your house. Then, call the router manufacturer.

Finally, if your sure that everything else is right, call your ISP, they can help.

It is built into the notebook, usually in the (top left and right hand) corners of the screen [in most laptops].
