Mildly interesting story on Yahoo News earlier has the Winner of the country's beauty pageant speaking 3-4 languages -- but not the Home Language... SO... the thought & QUESTION is...
-- could that happen in the USA? what would you think if Miss America was a Russian or Italian 1st generation... or BORN HERE and was a stunning, knock-out ultra-talented Mexican or Cuban immigrant... and fluent in Spanish living in a part of Texas, or Miami? etc.

In Belgium there are 3 official languages: French, Dutch/Flemish, and German. Ideally every citizen is supposed to know all three languages, but it's possible that there are people who never had any need for knowing all of these, e.g.: people living in little villages, or not where the language border clash. And usually people competing at beauty pageants are not that smart, no offense, I do not mean all of them. Thus its possible that out of sheer ignorance she was only taught one of the official languages.

People seem to forget that Belgium has 3 official languages (and Dutch is the most spoken language by 60% of the inhabitants), and there are differences between the Flemish, Wallonie and Brussels regions. But OK, you speak English. So contact with other teenagers will be no problem. Almost every teenager speaks English. In Flanders English spoken movies and television shows get subtitles so you can follow them. In Wallonie they prefer to dub the programs (like in France). Music is very popular with a lot of shows and festivals in every city. The summer festivals (Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop, Dour Festival are the biggest) are very popular. If you do any sport, find a sportclub, it is a good way to meet new people! I'm sure you will like it!
