Well, if he's coming home, you don't have to send him anything at all. Give him something when he gets home.
If you want, you can probably bake him cookies or something. Send a lot so there is enough for his entire platoon, then include a note to the drill sergeant saying that they are for everyone.
Everybody will probably have to do a bunch of push-ups to get them, but I've been to basic training and I know that cookies are worth push-ups.
Drill sergeants aren't as bad as they seem, they just have to be jerks because it's their job. They'll most likely let the trainees have them.

If you mean you'd like to send him something, I'd send something to fill time.
Books
Games
Crosswords
Word search
Magazines
Stationary
etc....
Or things for comfort.....
Boots
A fan
Anything he can have and mentions he misses.
For his birthday, how about a real nice frame with a photo of the two of you he can keep close. Or a photo ironed on to a pillow case..... Some type of special memento.
Enjoy your holiday visit!

What he wants most whether he realizes it or not is memories. Give him some sort of collection of photos of the two of you/friends, trips, special occasions, most of all everyday life. Maybe a scrapbook. Do something really special with him when you're with him over Christmas, take a trip or something, just the two of you... create powerful memories.

Make him a steak dinner with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob and then give him a candle lit body massage while listening to good music.

Throw a party for him with all his friends and family there. Or if it is something you want him to take back with him, go get professional pictures taken of yourself.
