I believe the placement of the apostrophe is correct.

The objects being discussed are the kings of both players. Therefore, the apostrophe of the plural possessive form should be added to the end of the plural noun, others.

Wrong. "Others" as used in your sentence is not plural it is singular possessive.

Think about it this way. Remove the word king from the sentence... Which is right?

The players try to checkmate each OTHERS ... or

The players try to checkmate each OTHER...

So... OTHER'S is correct.

i agree with katy; others is plural, and making a plural posessive would put the apostrophe after the s.
