I wonder if any one could confirm or not. In the parietal cell there appears to be more mitochondria then in the goblet cell. Does this indicate that the release of HCI and intrinsic factor require more energy?? also would the transport of intrinsic factor need to cross the membrane via the protein pump??
Thanks.

I can't understand why this question got so many hostile and sarcastic answers, but it's a little depressing. Maybe because people don't know what you mean by a parietal cell (a cell in the stomach that secretes H+ into the stomach lumen against a gradient) or intrinsic factor (a protein that complexes vitamin B12 and allows it to be absorbed in the ileum).

You cannot say that more mitochondria definitely means more energy (ATP) requirements for the parietal cell (although I suspect that that is the case), but it is highly suggestive of that. Nature does little or nothing for no reason. We can't always be right about what that reason is - your guess is good, but not a fact - but you can be pretty sure that it means SOMETHING that probably can be discovered if it is not already known.

Check this out. It doesn't answer your question, but you may find it interesting: "Correlation of parietal cell structure and function." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed&uid=6228573&cmd=showdetailview&indexed=google

I suspect that this PDF document does answer your question, but I don't have time to read it now, so I'll leave it to you: http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/reprint/24/1/137.pdf

EDIT* LOL. I see that I have 5 thumbs down already. Let's go for the record, guys! (I had great insults about the Academic Special Olympics and a Jeff Spicoli convention being in town, but I don't want to risk having my answer yanked because I offended anybody, so just use your imaginations, boys, if you have any. Now I'm late.)

not really sure what intrinsic factor is...

but H+ ions are the only things which cross the protien pump. Cl doesnt really get involved...

not sure what they has to do with more of less energy in each type of cell though. i think there are many other factors to consider

Wow. What's wrong with everyone on here?

They only call it a stupid question because they aren't intelligent enough to even know what the question means, let alone know the answer!

Oh,erm...I actually don't know the answer either.......

It appears that you need to learn the value of something called RESEARCH. That's what libraries and scientific journals are for. As a matter of course you should always back up your findings from two separate sources where ever possible (Yahoo! Answers is not a legitimate source of scientific research, it should not be used).

I assume you're studying for a degree, so earn it.
