I believe it had something to do with Hitler wanted the masons killed as well as the Jews. The pin was created as a new means of recognition not associated with the square and compass. There are many members who still wear them today.

The flower (because its so small) was often sent to GI's who had been away for a lengthy period of time by their wives or girlfriends as a way for the soldiers to remember them by.
