the computer recognizes the drive, but not any cd that i put in it. it doesnt show a blank cd, nor will it read ANY cd thats in it. ive uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and in device manager it shows its working properly. Sometimes an error pops up- scsi error-disk not recognized. i switched cd-writers, and same thing, so I know its not a bad writer. i went to hp website to see if theres an updated driver, but nothing. it just seemed to stop working for some reason. it had been working just fine. im running windows xp. i do have a dvd drive in it as well, but its working perfectly. any ideas? im at wits end with it!

also- i did install NERO cd burning software hoping that would do something, and it didnt, neither did cd-writer 2. doesnt seem like any of the software recognizes theres an actual cd burner there.

Double check cables to drive are connected firmly.
If so try a new IDE cable (assuming it's an IDE CD R)
Still no luck ?
Try deleting the CD DRIVE fom device manager, plus the IDE controllers and restarting the PC. Windows will redetect everything and refresh it's driverlists for these items.

Good Luck
