Depends on your state laws dictate. Some states say if you owe an 'excessive' amount, then you can not get a passport. It's up to the state to decide what 'excessive' means. Sometimes it's as little as $1,000

As other have said much depends on how much you owe and how long you have owed. It could depend on wther or not there were any legal actions taken to make you pay. But if you are just having your wages garnished you would be fine.

Now you could root around state laws, federal laws, ICE rules, see if they have a record and all that but it's the government so who knows what the real answer would be.

I say just apply for one. If it comes great. If they deny it they will give you the reason. And I'm sure they would then supply you with a number that you can call to contest, appeal or find more info about the denial.

If you owe back child support, you don't have the money to travel, and therefore don't need a passport.

Your responsibilities, make good on them!

I have heard that if you owe less than 2500 in child support they will not say anything. But if you owe more then the pass port is denied till you are caught up.

Where in Germany is her husband going? I am currently stationed here in USAG Wiesbaden, Germany with the 66th MI BDE. I could talk to the local legal people here. JAG can at least point her into the right direction to find out the correct answers.
