like the previous person said make sure you have stay stitching where you want the fringe to stop. cut the flannel about every inch or so. put it in the washer and wash. make sure you clean the lint filter as this will make a mess. take it outside and shake it good. now dry in the dryer. i would add a tennis shoe or something like that. make sure you check the lint filter often as you will end up with alot of little threads in the filter. i used to make denim vests and frayed the edges. this is the procedure i used.

Be sure to make a couple rows of stay stitches where you want the fringes to stop. Flannel will keep fraying away unless you have a stopping point.

Is it with short seam on face of quilt? If so find opposite grain in fabric and pull apart from the rest. It's just like when you wash and dry fabrics before you use them, the edges fray in the dryer.
