I too faced the same dilemma.

Whether to go after my what my heart said or whether to go after what my head said.

An MBA is a mealticket that will get you a job, and an M.A in English Literature was what my heart lusted after. Luckily, Fortune smiled on me. I enrolled for an MBA programme and also a distance education M.A(English Literature). And since I too love the language, I did not find the M.A English Literature to be particularly tough or anything, since it was something that I loved to study.

You could join for both courses, one of them in the distance education mode, if it permitted by the universities that you intend to join. I suggest that the M.A. be in the distance education mode, as a distance MBA is not looked upon too kindly by employers. And once you get a job, you can also join for M.Phil or Ph.D. in English, again through distance, and follow your dream while working and making enough to follow your dream.

After M.A., there aren't many wellpaying jobs out there in India. You need to do atleast a B.Ed. to become a school teacher, or Ph.D. to start as a lecturer in a good college and work your way up to Professor and eventually Principal. The payscales for such positions will never measure upto those MNC jobs that require an MBA. Apart from academics(the principal field of employment for M.A. English graduates), there are only a limited number of jobs such as content writing for websites, copywriting for advertising agencies, and editing of books and journals, mostly scientific, technical and management(STM); a profession that is increasingly being outsourced to India nowadays.

Alternatively, you could join for Ph.D. in English abroad and avail of the excellent placement opportunities there.

This way you could have the best of both worlds.

I think you are slated for English in M.A.It is always good to know first your liking and then to think of prospects etc. If you have a good result in English , go for Masters in that.Once done , you should do your NET and B.Ed too. That's the bare minimum to give you a respectable profession as a teacher ......in any central School, in any College /University (if NET is cleared). And, get your Phd done while in job.You should get a good guide while you do your Masters in English, when you are in contact with many such good guides of any university ........(I mean, the University where you will do your Masters).
Forget about MBA.There's hardly any scope for anyone with average results from a sub standard Institute.Almost all Universities of this country has the MBA courses .In addition, there are plenty of lower grade Institutes.......producing thousands of such MBAs with no future.
Stick to the idea of doing MA in English.OK?

P.S. By the `way, you can try for all competetive Examinations for IAS, IFS etc. while you will be doing your MA. It's not a great deal. You really will like it.
