Well, I've never been a Taxi Driver, but I would assume that they wear Christmas hats for the same reason other people wear Christmas sweatshirts, or sweaters, or pins...to spread Christmas cheer!
And if, while spreading the Christmas cheer, someone wants to spread a little dough around in the Taxi Drivers direction, well, why not?

Santa hats are warmer than baseball caps. They do it to be economical, they wear a warmer hat- the heat gets turned down. Ever notice?

If its on Thanksgiving or formerly, then definite. If its on December twenty 6th or later, then it is too late. the only time i'm interior the Christmas spirit is from Black Friday to Christmas day because of the fact it is whilst it is formally Christmas time.
