Depends on the situation. Someone who insists on leading when they aren't qualified is an egotist, not a genuine leader. Someone who fails to take charge when they are the ones for the job are simply irresponsible.

Depends...if the chief wants to jump over a cliff...then I'm an Indian. If I can get the non followers to use the steps..I suppose I'm the chief.

Usually a chief, but I will defer to another chief if his idea is better.
Sometimes it gets tiring being in the lead and I just want to follow for a while.

Out of over 20 years in the Navy all but 3 were in a leadership position. Since retiring, I've only HAD to take a leadership position twice. I did not enjoy it because I really had no control over those I was supervising. All I could do was report their failure to comply to MY supervisor, which was a waste of time. I have turned down 2 other short term projects because I knew the crew they were going to give me and I lost out on some good pay. I have another project coming in January, however the workers won't have to think on this one. I will point, they will do. Simple enough. HA! Most of the crews we get are street thugs who think they are ENTITLED to come to work, but not put out the effort required. Long story why this is tolerated.
