Why does this not surprise me Any children growing up in this country need to be totally immersed in our language and culture. Is it so wrong to expect children living here and using our education system to learn our language too? There are so many nationalities now living in the UK that it would be impossible to have 'bilingual teachers or assistants' to cater for all. Maybe enforce a 1 year compulsory English course before they can join a school class? On passing an English test, then and only then can they apply to a school for a normal place?

The English language is not important except possibly to the English who think their's is the only official language here in UK.
Bad news for any little Englanders reading this because Welsh, the oldest British language spoken quite widely here in UK is also an official language.
Go to Welsh speaking Wales and you'll find a lot of folk who are not interested in speaking to you or anyone else in anything other than Welsh.
Why should kids, who's native tongue just happens to be Urdu have to go about speaking English? They're not going to.
If the lack of English in many of our schools is a problem, then we all know who to blame, don't we? Why the UK.gov of course, who else; I mean they allowed them to come here and settle and find work and pay taxes etc etc.
No one has the God given right to force people to speak English if they do not want to.
My Grandfather of fond memory, a veteran of the Bore War and WW-One, was forced to wear a heavy wooden placard in school in Welsh Speaking Wales with the words Welsh Not carved into it's face.
So you may well understand why I am unable to speak Welsh because the English forced hundreds of thousands of the Welsh to speak what for them was a foreign language.
The same crap is now being forced upon the speakers of such as Urdu and so forth.

Nothing needs to be done. Having a multi-lingual environment is a plus for education--a fact any teacher can tell you.
And I don't know where you read about this disgusting idea of segregating students. But if I were you, I'd stop repeating it. That is nothing but outright racism--I don't think you want to be identified with that sort of white trash, do you?
Also--it doesn't cost more to educate a non-English speaking child. The only time that occurs is when bigots and racists interfere with the schools, trying to impose expensive and damaging policies like segregation.
BTW--for the scum who run around decrying amnesty based on the nonsense that "immigrants are breaking the law"--their attempts at discriminating against immigrant children are AGAINST THE LAW.

You were very accommodating to 'sprocket' and one or two others in explaining the source of the stats. that you quoted. I say this, because they were widely reported in the broadsheet papers, and shouldn't have required explanation, except, of course, to those who don't want to believe them. 'Emmamac' and 'machelan' have made sensible responses. In the main, however, most respondents seem to think that it is the responsibility of the British taxpayer to bring immigrants up to speed in their understanding of English, including the provision of expensive interpreters. I beg to differ. A good understanding of English should be one of the pre-requisites to being accepted as an immigrant. You simply cannot go on supplying soft options.

Children should be taught to be multi-lingual anyway. We're part of a global economy now whether we like it or not. It's easier to learn additional languages as children. I agree most things should be taught in English, however, English is a very difficult language. The more languages you know, the better grasp you can have on English, and correct English at that (No slang, no ebonics, etc).

But what do we do when the immigrant kids get better results than the English speaking kids ? Now that would be embarrassing & also very plausible, what with the level of general ignorance all around us.

It is a great mistake not to be teaching the incomers English instead of continuing to teach them in their former languages. Surely they will integrate sooner and better if they learn the language of the country they wish to join.

All those who like to point to the days of the founding of this country should be happy with that. That's probably the way it was back then.
