Whether I am using it at the time or not, my computer shuts off and starts again. I have been directed to the microsoft website for the "cure" many, many times to no avail. Microsoft says that it is caused by my smartlink modem and I need to install service pack 2. Done that and it didn't help. Any ideas?

Virus.

Power supply issues

Overheating issues

The power supply issues and the overheating issues, as a rule, will not cause it to shut down AND restart, just shut down. Run a good virus program, run a good spyware program.

Does it do the same thing if you boot to safe mode?

This happens to mine too. I am also yet to find a cure. In my case it says that windows has recovered from a serious error. May be we should try to reload the windows or there could be a loose component somewhere inside cpu, like the ram.

try changing your modem as microsoft says it is the problem, however, i doubt the modem will be causing your computer to totaly reboot itself, i would imagine that you have a power issue, maybe let a tech take a look at your local shop.

Have you checked the power cord? I know my friend had the same problem and it was his power supply because it got zapped by lightning. It could also be your power bar. Or you have a virus.

Get help, seriously. Something isn't right. Big time. Oh, I would have thought hacker, but if Microsoft says blah, then I can't compete with that.

I have the same trouble as you are last June, it was because of the unbalanced power distribution on our town.

Start->Settings→Control Panel→Power Options→Power schemes, check to see if it is set to shutdown under certain conditions.
