last night we had a snowstorm and my husband heard sparkling electrical sounds in the basement comingfrom in behind our entertainment unit, he shut the power off to the basement but now we are wondering if water got in behind the wall where the plug is or what happened. How do we approach the situation without getting electricuted?

Unplug the entertainment center and move it so you can see the receptacle outlet. With nothing plugged in, turn the power on. If it is ok, plug things back in one at a time. I doubt water leaked in during a snow storm. If something is bad enough to cause a fire, the circuit breaker will trip before that happens. If there are still sparking sounds, call an electrician.

Get a hold of an electrician who has the necessary gadgets to test the circuitry--don't fool around with this--you don't want to start a fire or something--somethings you can wing it and some you clearly CANNOT--use common sense and good luck.

The electronic equipment has high voltage power supply units, that you will hear leaking voltage through dampness.
