The word "Indigenous". What does it mean according to the dictionary? (I've misplaced mine.) Compare that meaning to what our aboriginals say they are. How do the 2 words compare? I heard years ago that one does not mean the other, but cannot check myself.

I heard years ago that the word Indigenous & the word Native mean the same thing. As a native is anyone born in the country they live in (or something), that would mean that any person with origins from anywhere in the world who was/is born here is a Native or Indigenous Person of Australia. If this is incorrect, I would be most interested to learn Why.

ab = before
original = the first
indigenous = native to that place.

Aboriginals are people with prehistoric roots in the area. Aboriginals can be indigenous, but indigenous people are not necessarily aboriginals. You can be an indigenous Australian if you were born there, even if you have European roots, but you can only be an aboriginal Australian if your ancestors were there for Dreamtime.

1 : having originated in and being produced, growing, living, or occurring naturally in a particular region or environment
Aboriginals in Australia are indigenous having originated there. Maori in New Zealand are not indigenous (although they claim to be as they arrived there first) as they travelled there from the Pacific Islands.

–adjective
1. originating in and characteristic of a particular region or country; native (often fol. by to): the plants indigenous to Canada; the indigenous peoples of southern Africa.
2. innate; inherent; natural (usually fol. by to): feelings indigenous to human beings.

Not sure how that is different to what you are referring to regarding our aboriginal people.

indigenous means born in the country or territory. animals can be indigenous or imported.
aboriginals are almost always indigenous unless they are recent refugees, and are normally hunter gatherers rather than agricultural, and are always human, not animals.
