Forecasting:

Prediction:
1. The act of predicting.
2. Something foretold or predicted; a prophecy.

They are basically the same. The cost is a function of the items, whether they are material or labor, times the quantity used. However the difference is really an issue of time,and degree of certainty. And estimate is a relatively short time frame. with a fair degree of certainty of # of items * cost/item. The Forecast is usually out several months out and therefore has a lower degree of certainty. The prediction and forecast is the same. There is however, no absolute defenition, and can be used interchangeably.

forecasting involves scientific instruments (like weather or climate forecasts) while prediction only relies on human senses
