DirectX 10 comes with Windows Vista and is not available for older versions of Windows.

Hardware that supports DirectX 10 will also support earlier versions of DirectX.

DirectX 10 is for Vista only (officially) If you are using Windows XP you are limited to Direct X 9. With that said, while the 8600 GT is Direct X 10 compliant, in real world situations it's Direct X 10 performance/rendering is not fast at all. More than likely you'll probably find yourself forcing Direct X 9 rendering in most games in order to get a decent frame rate.

I don't think it could hurt anything to download it anyway.
