I have an oil fired steam furnace. The furnace seems to have its own temperature control now. The thermostat sets to 62 degrees, but the furnace has been maintaining 84 degrees. I know it's not the thermostat because I removed it from the wall and the same thing happens. Anyone have an idea on what's going on?

I figured out that my burner turns itself off when the water level gets too low. So, my problem is that the furnace is stuck in the "ON" position. Maybe I have to call for service on this one? I have a honeywell R8184G intermittent ignition.

More troubleshooting now reveals that the furnace is definitely stuck in the "ON" position. The reason it turns off intermittently is because the saftey mechanism senses the low water level and shuts it off until the water cools enough to raise the water level again. I have a call in to the maintenance man but want to try to do this without him. Maybe my Honeywell R8184G intermittent ignition is failing?
