As in microsoft word. MS word saves as .doc. What program were you writing in? Also you can just reopen the paper and go 'save as', under file type you should be able to choose a .doc file. In openoffice pick the 97/xp one.

Well, if you are using a Mac, which doesn't normally use extensions, you may have to add .doc to the end of your file name. Specifically, .doc declares that the contents of the file can be read into Microsoft Word and have format codes that match Word. Most other Word Processors (as opposed to text editors, which do not allow formatting of the text) will read .doc files because MSWord dominates the market and many will write them if a Save As is done.

Save your paper in .doc format. Do you use Microsoft Word? That's the default format, but always make sure when you go to save your work, check the drop down menu on the "Save" window to make sure it's a ".doc" file.
Hope that helps!
