I've got a window-unit air conditioner running in my room, and really like to have the room cold at all times ( I drop it down to 65-67 at night) because the rest of the house is roasting, and I sleep MUCH better when it is cold. I'm in eastern Texas, and it usually does not drop a couple degrees lower than 32 at night.

I know that a lot of people take the aircon out during winter, but that is not an option, and I would highly prefer to be able to run it, rather than letting it sit immobilized. I recognize it is recommended not to keep it on, but our winters here are very light, so I am curious.

Can I safely do it? Sort of desperate, because there is no other way to cool the room anywhere near 67, and it gets too toasty to sleep comfortably.

Alternatively, I can set it to run on FAN, which circulates air and doesn't cool. Is that safer than running it on COOL? I'd rather it on cool, if possible. Help, please :)

Yes.

Running an a/c unit during cooler months (ie: winter) is perfectly fine. People that remove their wall units during winter months do so to prevent cold drafts from entering through the unit and thus causing their heating system to work less effectively and cost more money.

Rumning it on cool is fine; however, I recommend that you check the manual (or get one from the manufacturer) to make sure regular maintenence is done.

While you can run it and it should be fine you may end up with a load of ice on the evaporator coil. When it is cooler than about 65f outside you run the risk of an iced up evaporator.

If you really need cool air when it is cool outside you can have a tech modify your A/C to run in cold temperatures. You will need a low pressure cut out, fan cycling control and a TXV added. It may also need a crankcase heater.

Yes, you can run it all year. I know what you are saying I live on the coast of Louisiana so I stay busy year round working on a/cs. I have to have it cool to sleep after a day working in attics with the humidity at 100% year round. Just be sure and keep you filter clean and have it checked in the spring to make sure your condensor coil is clean and fan motors are oiled.

You can use room air conditioners year round and as long as you need, that is common in tropical countries and that goes for Texas, But get it serviced at least once a year for efficiency and economy

Yes you can. Cold will not hurt the unit at all. Just go ahead and use it normally. There is nothing unsafe about it.

You can run it all you want, wont hurt any, it would however be better if you could just open window up but thats just commonsense.
