I've done it, and it's very rewarding!
After all, when working in catering, I worked for nine Christmas Days in a period of ten years, it's no big deal!

I used to do that every year - before I got married. It was a homeless shelter not a soup kitchen, but I served dinners to homeless folk and I loved doing it. Highly recommended.

Yes. When I lived in the city I helped out once a week. It was a great experience and I wish more people would help out, there is much to be gained from volunteering.

Then do so...I gave up buying Xmas cards a couple of years ago. now I make a £20 donation to my charity (The NSE) every year instead...not a fortune, but if we all did that, imagine the money charities would raise every Xmas
