Hie, I can provide you with a definite answer to this. During day time, either he plays too much or was frightened by something. My baby is like that. During day if she is frightened, she will have problem sleeping at night and even when she is asleep, she will cry and scream.

I had my son do this once at 10 months, i was in the shower and he was fast asleep in his cot, i heard him wail a loud high pitched horrible noise then he started to cry I ran to see if he was ok but he was fast asleep still. I just patted him back to sleep and he was fine, it scared the hell out of me though. I guess he just had a terrifying dream.
Young children especially babies are said to be able to see and sense the spirit world as they are fresh into the world with no fear and judgements. Also i have heard they dream about there past lives (if you believe in that stuff) because they have just left it. If his eyes are closed its probably just a nightmare, maybe something scary during the day?? Dont play peek-a-boo with him!!!!!

I'm not sure what age they can start but i have heard of night terrors. And as far as the ghost thing, well i hate to sound like a weird-o buuuuut, babies and animal's are able to see and feel things that adults can not. So maybe remember to say prayers with your baby before bedtime. Good luck, and i hope you get some rest.
Night Terrors Symptoms: Sudden awakening from sleep, persistent fear or terror that occurs at night, screaming, sweating, confusion, rapid heart rate, inability to explain what happened, usually no recall of "bad dreams" or nightmares, may have a vague sense of frightening images. Many people see spiders, snakes, animals or people in the room, are unable to fully awake, difficult to comfort, with no memory of the event on awakening the next day.

My daughter has a wonderful habit of falling asleep in her car seat. Yesterday afternoon on our way home from church she did so and we carried her in and just left her to sleep in there. (She also does this in her stroller as well. We have carried both the stroller and the car seat upstairs to our bedroom so that we can nap as well. We figure she's comfortable or she wouldn't be sleeping and we don't want to risk moving her, lest we end her nap that she needs, and prevent us from getting a nap or things done as well.) While napping yesterday, my daughter (who is only three months) let out some yelps. My husband joked that maybe Lilith was trying to take her. I was confused and he explained that Lilith was a supposed demon who would steal babies. It was an old theory before the SIDS explanation. I joked and said that she was upset because Eve "won".
When my daughter seems uncomfortable in her sleep, I check to see what could be causing it. I've learned that if I'm too warm/cold in the bedroom, she is likely to be too. So I add or remove her blanket as necessary. Also, my husband says I move around and make noise in my sleep as well. I figure that both are the result of dreaming, or letting off extra energy, etc.
His diaper could also be causing discomfort. I've picked up my daughter at night a few times when I thought she was awake to change her diaper only to have her sleep on the changing pad as I change her. Since she eventually fully wakes up, I then nurse her and she goes back to sleep, nice and happy. There have been times when I woke up feeling as though I had to use the restroom or there were other discomforts, but sleep won out. Just this morning, from about 4:30 to 5:30 my daughter fussed and moved around and stilled, all while sleeping. From about 5:30 to 6:30 she was up with a changing and a feeding and is now contently sleeping in her crib. (I assume she's sleeping as I didn't turn on the monitor. I have to go up and check, especially since my husband needs to get up to finish school work.)

Babies cry like that when they're uncomfortable. Does he pull his legs up, too and scrunch up his face? If so, ask the doctor about colic (and stock up on Mylicon drops).
If it's not that, it could be the baby got cold, peed (they HATE that, especially boys), or is having hunger pangs...

A concept such as ghosts is impossible for a 4 month old to comprehend........ check the area around which the baby sleeps for any bugs which might bite him..........use clean bed and matress.......also feed him properly before he goes to bed........

My daughter does this all the time and my doctor has said it is due to wind causing stomach cramps.
