"Theory" is a scientific word. A theory is a scientific hypothesis that can be tested. Wikipedia calls a theory a testable model.

A scientific "law" is something that can be objectively proven through testing, and will accurately predict something every time.

Example: relativity (E=mc2) is a theory because it can be tested, but has not yet been proven. Newton's law of universal gravitation on the other hand is something that is proven, and in a sense, absolute.

So, if journalistic theories are based on testable, quantitative evidence and analysis that can be subject to "peer review" and scrutiny, then why not.

If they are mere conjecture and cannot be tested, then they do not belong.

Theory very rarely has any place anywhere outside of a learning environment. That being said, theory helps create a thinking framework to help deliver more intelligent thought. In other words, it makes you smarter. The real world runs on money, hence Britney Spears makes for widely read journalism. Aristotle's ideas on communication have nothing to do with Britney Spears making headlines (well, they actually do if you read about what makes good drama.... but you get the idea), but theory allows someone to say, I know what is going to work because I have thought things through. Theory is the brainpower, and money is currency. That's my argument. It's harsh, but I believe it's true.

No...

They have a place...(I have a Journalism & English B.A.)...

The "inverted pyramid" style of Journalism can be very limiting depending on the kind of story you're covering...

"Literary Journalism" like "The Right Stuff," enables the reporter to "interpret" and include his own views about situations he is reporting on...the "theory" that a reporter should remain absolutely "impartial" is ridiculous given the fact that "total human impartiality" is impossible...

So..."theories" can be incorporated into stories if their presence has a "value" to the main body of the story, and are "relevant" to the "message" of the story being covered...

Yes and no.

Basically, theory is for training kids. They sum up experience in the pass and formalized into so called best practice, i.e. no one can achieve.

You are an individual being and got your own essence. Hence, you should codify all your founding in your own notion. Then, you can have innovation.

However, the consistency would be a problem. In order to maintain the consistency, you need to be grounded to the pass, i.e. theory. Then, your innovation would be an extention of the existing theory if you can prove them.

I believe this question is less about stating the facts as stating your opinions. You may need to back up your opinions with examples, facts and the opinions of prominent people who agree with your ideas. As the question potentially discredits theorists (a theorist's bias would be to say theory is practical), you probably should not quote one, unless their arguement is very compelling. Instead try to track down an experienced journalist. Hopefully one will answer this question for you on Y!Answers.

I was thinking about saying yes, but really everything started as theory, and by theory do we find fact. So if we ban theory from journalism and mass media, we limit our chances of finding fact.
