I was stealing money in my till from my last job as a cashier at a grocery store. In time security had caught on to me and gave me the option to quit, and sign a peice of paper with my social security# on it,to 'pay back what i stole'. The security guy said that they'll take out $50 out of my paychecks until the estimated amount of money stolen was payed off. When i shared my story with some people though, they said they didnt think they can do that. Does anybody know if they can really do that?

I do not believe that it is legal to take out money from your pay check without your endorsement; however, I would say that you are very lucky that they are giving you an opportunity to pay back what you stole. You could be tried and if convicted you can go to prison for a predetermined term. Pay back the money and keep quiet. Once you have a conviction on your record you are a cooked goose for getting a decent job in the future.

Yes, you signed a promissory note. You are legally obligated to repay them and they can continue to do this. They should put you in jail. Then they would get their money back through the court and you could learn your lesson. And they probably still can as I doubt the statute of limitations has run out. Lol, funny thought, I can picture them giving you your last check and being all paid up and including a pink slip in your check and then having the cops waiting for you outside. That would be hilarious.

They already had your SS#, the piece of paper you signed was probably an agreement that gave them the authority to garnish your wages. Pay the money and be thankful they didn't prosecute you.

Well, yes and no.

The manner they did it wasn't ethical.

BUT they can sue you for it anyways.

Your in a tricky situation my friend, make sure to have a copy of that paper and make sure they don't scam YOU. Your lucky they didn't call the cops.

Besides, learn your lesson, you were an idiot. Your trying to fight a battle within an already lost war.

Of course they can. They can take you to court and get a lot more out of you, too. I'm surprised they're being this nice to you. You should be grateful and shut up.
