Personally, I would say 46 is too old...=(

I think if possible, women should try to have children before they reach 40yrs old. My aunt had her last child when she was 42yrs old and is an awesome mother to all of her 4 children. I would never say to her she was too old. It really depends on the person I think, their energy and activity level. There are probably 40yr old women with more get-go than me and I'm only 30. My little girl who just turned 2yrs old is an angel but really tuckers me out. You should be young enough to be able to take care of your baby until adulthood, so when I see the +60yr old woman who used IVF to have a child I feel a bit sad for her baby.

Chances of complications with your pregnancy/genetic disorders start to increase around 35yrs of age. That's why they recommend an amniocentisis done if you are 35+. I had the extra blood test done to check for triple chromosomes (trisomy) but that just gives your chances of it, not if you actually have it or not. Even if you do everything right, are still young, you can still have a child with a genetic disorder.

First of all, ignore what Hokulei said about the chances of a Downs child being really high after the age of 30. This is nonsense. The chances of a trisomy disorder such as Downs increases gradually with the age of the mother and then sharply after the age of 40. It's higher at 25 than 20, but no way could it be described as high after the age of 30.

To answer your original question, it's largely down to personal choice. I wanted to have all my children before the age of 35, and I managed this, having my second and last at the age of 34, and the first at 31.

I would say it isn't too old until Nature intervenes, but if a woman is still fertile after the age of 45, then perhaps she may want to consider herself too old, even if she is still able to have children.

I'm 36 and have a 3 week old baby, plus a 14 yr old and a 9 yr old.
If you had asked me a year ago if I thought I was too old to have a baby I would probably said yes, but now I have one I must say I am enjoying it far more than with my other two and if I hadn't have been sterilized during my c-sec, I might have considered having another lol.....

Physically, I entered menopause at 40.

At 35 my grandmother gave birth to a Down's baby -- who outlived her by about 20 yrs. She was institutionalized for over 25 years beyond when her mom was able to parent her.

The risk and % of genetic disorders increases with the age of the mother during pregnancy.

You need to be young enough to have the strength to get less sleep and what it takes to mentally and physically stay one step ahead of your kids as you parent them. Yet, you need to be old enough to be wise in your parenting. Mature enough to give first place to your kids rather than yourself.

Personally i would like to have all my children by the time i am 35 as the risks for genetic disorders such as Downs Syndrome dramatically increases past this age.

All I know is that if you're over 30 the chances of having a baby with down syndrome is really high
