The breeder should have given you the registration forms to fill out and mail in at the time you bought the pup. If you got nothing, you can still ask the breeder about it. It's possible that one or both of your dog's parents was/were not registered. If both parents aren't registered, the pups can't be registered. Another possibility is that both parents are registered but the breeder failed to register the litter. The litter has to be registered before you can individually register the puppies. A third possibility (but not the last) is that in the excitement of getting the puppy, you misplaced or threw away the registration papers. Start with calling the breeder to ask about the papers. Also look into seldom used desk drawers, etc. where you may have stashed the papers for safekeeping. Hope you find them, good luck. The only benefit, if you can call it that, is to come up with a long fancy name and register it with the AKC. You will receive a certificate of registration and can access the pedigree online (I'm not sure if they still send you one) and print it out, frame it, keep it, whatever. The AKC is only a registry office. You pay money to register a unique name for a dog. If you plan to show the dog then it has to be AKC registered. The AKC sponsors many dog shows each year. It has its own magazine and a museum. If you don't plan to show or breed your dog, you don't need to register it. The registration is a tiny bit of a status symbol to some people but it is only proof that your unique name was registered, and nothing else. It doesn't signify quality or even that the dog is purebred.
