They can and do every day. Just because you're writing about something that happened doesn't mean your story, pictures or video are any less yours (or your employer's, if you're a staffer somewhere).

Yes. The reporter may not have a lock on the events, but his writing, his account, his telling of the story is his to copyright.

Actually, the entire newspaper is copyrighted every day. Usually it is associated with exclusive stories, so that other media outlets will say, "The Chicago Tribune reported today that..." At least, that's what they are supposed to say.

You can copyright anything as long as it is yours. Like a strory or a poem etc.
