He actually could because the Patriot Act allows the president to decide if someone is an enemy combatant. So, I guess you're right. I think he wont do this because then it might lead many conservatives to not support him. Then, his rule would have even less legitimacy than it already has. Governments fear democracy, but they have to be careful to not overtly react like how you suggest. It's easier to use proclamations and subtle suggestion, which the subservient media is used for, to control thoughts and opinions of the public. That works too.

Because that might be the one thing he could do that would haul people away from their tvs and computers long enough to stage a straight up revolt against the government.
Also, he might think it is legal, but it goes against the entire spirit of our law. Remember, the president is a figurehead, the Law of the Land is the Constitution, and such an act would violate it worse than any other presidential edict in the history of our State.

No legally Bush can't do this. It's one thing to pick up some foreigner in a foreign country engaged in fighting or espionage not wearing a uniform and sending them to a secret prison, and it's quite another to start rounding up US Citizens who are exercising their free speech rights and putting them in secret prisons.
Nor does Bush have any interest in doing so. If he did, he'd sure as hell start with idiots like Harry Reid.
The fact that you believe that Bush would do so shows the high level of BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) you have. It's really quite sad. You've joined the tinfoil hat nation.

The President has the ability to do it and is doing it, but it is against the law.
