Well - James Patterson has you covered in both the fantasy and murder mystery books. He has three series out. "Maximum Ride" is the fantasy one - and "Alex Cross" and "Women's Murder Club" are his murder mysteries. He's quite good - always number one New York Time besteller. Atonement is a pretty good book. It was recently made into a movie.
The Westing Game is a great mystery book. I loved it alot when I read it in the 6th grade.
You can never go wrong with the Sherlock Homes. Now they are a classic. Also, detective stories by Edgar A. Poe are also a great read because after all he created the detective story. Also, Edgar A. Poe is a great writter especially when the unanimous narrator is telling the story EX: Tell Tale Heart
Also, I personally liked the book The Hole.
It is not that well known but it is pretty interesting.

Assuming you are a younger person, I would recommend "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn," probably the best book I ever read.

Look up Piers Anthony. He has a series and I think the first of that series is called "A Spell for Chameleon".
