If you look at low growth aging populations in Europe and even in China, you will see that there are problems with a shortage of young people to do the work of the country or take care of its elderly.
The implementation may also be a problem. China's "Missing Girls" have left the only sons with a shortage of women for eligible brides.
When you average births over a whole society, where some people do not have any children, a slightly higher than birth rate (2 -3 children per fertile couple) is what is needed just for natural replacement. Otherwise, you have to import a lot of labor down the road, which some European countries, and even America, are having trouble managing these days.
I'm not so sure we are over populated, but I guess there are still Malthusian ideas out there.

Not if the family can support the children that they have.
However, if a woman on welfare keeps having children at other taxpayers expense , then she should be forced to have her tubes tied or get off welfare and pay for her own children.
If we truly want to limit over-population in this country, we should have better border patrol, and regulations that don't allow every Tom, Dick and Pedro in. They are the ones causing the population problem.
Forget population control, and start thinking about immigrant control.....

no it is not a good ideal, I have two kids and one on the way, I wanted 3 and I am going to have 3! that is my right! if you are worried about over-population don't breed!!!
also, have you heard the problems china is having, 20 men to 1 girl or something like that????I don't remember the facts but it was not good!!
We own our own home, we have a good income, and we can financially take care of the children we have (without welfare) so it is no ones right to tell me how many kids I can or cannot have!

I think so, possibly. A better idea though would be to tax after a certain number of children. Than maybe people who can't afford kids in the first place would think twice before popping a whole bunch out and getting on welfare. Not that I don't like welfare, but if you don't even attempt to limit the amount of children you have when you know you can't afford it, you should not be getting government help. And then, yeah, overpopulation is definitely the other part of the problem.

If living in a tyrannical dictatorship appeals to you, then I suppose this idea would appeal to you. And you'd applaud and cheer as women were forcibly aborted or sterilized, men who'd fathered more than one all marched to the doctor for vasectomies, and "extra" children euthanized.
Just do me a favor and don't complain when this same dictatorship decides it's time for your particular ox to be gored. You'll have asked for it, and will deserve it.

well "in theory" thats a good idea.
"in theory" china's or mao's communism should have worked.
now they've changed that.
what would the repercussions be in a social, or psicological level to everybody being the only son or daughter?
ahhh, in theory everything works. without a doubt and with no limitation.
