I don't have a fireplace set and it seems a lot easier if I could just vacuum up the mess. Is this safe to do?

You can but make absolutely sure that the fire is long since out and there are no embers.

Yes, this method works... Just be sure to use a shop vac.... A wet/dry one preferebly.. That way you can take out the paper filter and rinse the whole unit... If you use your regular vacuum you may have to replace the filter/bag....

Also, be sure that there are no HOT embers in the fireplace that could catch your vacuum on fire....

good luck

Yes you can.... But There are two things to keep in mind... #1. This is obvious but make SURE the fire is OUT. #2. You might look into some really good microfiltration filter bags for your vacuum. You'd be shocked at the dust your vacuum throws in the air and that smell is not one you want to have drifting around the house for MONTHS. So go spend a few extra dollars are some really good bags. And good luck.

Don´t do that. Quit being lazy and use a brush and dust pan. Then and only then maybe just to get the particles that remain.

You´re gonna clog up the filters on the vac since ashes are composed of the very finest particles and it will spread the hickory smell all over the place as well.

If your vacuum is over $400 I just wouldn't do it. The smell and odor will stay long after.

If you have a dirt devil or cheap vacuum go for it.

Scoop out as much as you can first with a dust pan, then vacuum the rest. If you vacuum it all it will clog the machine and ruin it.
