We just recently bought a 90 yr old home. The rooms in the upper floors shake when sanitation or delivery trucks go by and it is disconcerting. We are not sure if we should just chalk it up to the character of the house or call a contractor to check out the foundation. We are also a 15 min walk away from the beach, do water tables play a part in the stability of the home?

no, a truck on the street shouldn't cause enough vibration to make your house shake. like the other guy said, a train might do that, but a truck shouldn't.

i would call a contracter. better safe than sorry. hey, maybe he'll just tell you that it's not normal but your house can withstand it just fine. if not then you'll probably need some work done, but that's much better than the floor collapsing on you and someone getting badly hurt.

good luck :)

You need a home inspector or an engineer would be best.

Your contractor will just give you a line of bull, don't bother with him.

You could contact the city and find out if they have ever heard of othe residents having this trouble and you can find out the history of the house this way. Ask about permits that have been pulled and make sure all work that was done is legal.

Also, are the trucks speeding ? If so call the police so they can set up a speed trap.

You must be very close to the road for this to happen.

Most homes that are 90 years old would be above ground building. (no concrete slab) Be sure to have it inspected by the same inspector you had when you purchased the home. Then have it reinspected by another contractor and so on. These inspections should not cost you any money. ( your not buying the home so you are not hiring them for that service.) Remember 90 year old homes would not have had large trucks running around when it was built. If you 15 min. walk away from the beach then you should be far enough to be on firm ground.

it all depends on the amount of vibration these trucks are causing if you are really troubled by the vibration it would be in your intrest to get a survey done to establish exactly what is happening to the structure of the building when these trucks go by.
