A basic singer. Make sure you also buy sewing machine needles for Jeans. Not all needles sew the same things.

You can find classes at stores that sell sewing machines (Joann's, etc.) - I think it's like riding a bike - you don't forget. The only thing you may find is that you don't have the patience anymore for the little things - like pressing tiny corners. I would also offer this advice - if you are buying a new machine, do not buy a cheap one. There is nothing worse that a cheap sewing machine. It will drive you to drink and end up making you hate the sewing. Consider buying a good sewing machine an investment. Think Bernina or Husqvarna Viking - it will be worth it in the long run.

A good, name brand sturdy machine that can also handle heavy fabrics and at very least do zigzag stitches, buttonholes too. You don't need to buy an expensive machine for that. Biggest consideration is how much you want to spend. Shop around. Buy locally a machine that can be serviced in your area if necessary.
More information below. If you have time, go to your public library to look up the latest Consumer Reports Magazine rating for various brands of sewing machines.

I do agree with previous answer. To purchase a machine and spend that much money on only just a co-worker, relationship must be more than that. If money no object the professional Juki machine and a machine that does overlock stitches.

Get a good OLD machine before you go to Wal-Mart or such. Those plastic machines will NOT sew jeans very long. Singer is the worst now.
Check with a sewing machine dealer and ask their technician. Sometimes they have used ones all serviced and ready to go. Or buy an all metal one (older) somewhere like Craigslist or eBay or the Goodwill or thrift store for cheap and have it tuned up by your local sewing machine tech. Check dealerships and fabric stores (or yellow pages) for those guys, like me.
Good luck.

usually in a gift exchange the amount is $10. If you're buying a boss something I believe the limit is $25. An inexpensive sewing machine costs about $99 plus tax even at Walmart and is about 16 pounds, too large for a Christmas gift. There are battery run tiny sewing machines for quick fixes sold in catalog sales but they don't have enough strength to sew jeans. In my opinion a person usually buys their own sewing machine, or their husband buys one for them because sometimes they want additional functions like buttonholer, embroidery, double stitching, different sizes of zigzag. Just buying a sewing machine to sew a pair of jeans sounds silly to me. I wouldn't think it's your position to buy a co-worker a sewing machine unless there is a relationship there.

Singers are nice and Berninas are great as well as pfaff, brothers aren't bad as well. but if you are buying a machine for sewing jeans be wary. Most sewing machines like base models singers claim to sew jeans but in reality dont. Make sure it can sew thick denims most machines like singer will jam up and ruin the motor of the machine just trying to sew a very thin denim. and like some one else said bernina and pfaff are the better machine but a used model can cost close to 1,000 for bernina and 3,000 for pfaff. A decent singer that will sew jeans will run close to 500 to 600 dollars. I bought one for my wife that quilts and it is supposed to sew denim which it does, but it doesn't sew hems very well . and it cost 600.

If money is no object, Bernina's are THE BEST.
If money is a consideration, I would rather have an older (like new) Bernina than to have a brand new one of anything else. Try eBay or Craigslist for good deals.
She is one lucky gal to have a FRIEND like you!
