Dialup Downloading..... What the......?
Are there any programs out there that will help dialup downloading to be quicker? I'm not getting any younger, here. Dialup is the only thing availible here without paying 50.00-120.00 per month for Hughesnet, ..... all the companies want to charge an arm, a leg, and big toe for equipment and monthly charges. Ya feel me? And yes, I have indoor plumbing. This small town is not up to par on the technology game. 4 miles from me, the options for internet are more plentifull, but not where I live........ Any advice?????

Dial-up isn't worth the $5 a month.. I'd say try verizon DSL if they have it where you live, where I live it's only about $15 a month .

Don't install "DU Meter", I have this software an I can tell you that it uses alot of resources for a very small file. Plus you have to purchase. http://www.dumeter.com (Will only show the speed of your download being received and uploads. Good security feature, because if the color turns green, means a file is being uploaded. And if you are not the one uploading, means some person is stealing your data. And you just shut your pc down quick.

Curious in what small town, you live that they are so far behind in technology and charges outrageous fees.

There is no technical answer to your question. In todays world of modern technology, without having ADSL, the majority of the servers in the world are downloading at speeds higher then ADSL. For sure the servers will time out when attempting to download a file faster then you pc can receive.

I know from experience when I had to use dialup and just about every download would time out. (I was lucky to find people on the other end, who would work with my situation and compress the file and send to me as this made the file smaller and quicker). Sent via email to me.

- Browse the net on Firefox with images off
- Use a good download manager like IDM (www.internetdownloadmanager.com)
- Tweak the TCP/IP stack with tools like SpeedGuide's TCP Optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php). Just slide it all the way down.
- Pick up the phone and press a number to get rid of the dial tone. It should be clean and not crackling. Noise like this cuts down on the download speed.
- When downloading, choose less-congested mirrors or those nearer to you.
- Use a tool like DUMeter (http://www.dumeter.com/) to see your actual throughput.

If you get download speeds of around 5-6 kB/s (note the big B), then that's the limit my friend.

There is no way to "speed up" the process if you have dial up. Sorry about that. If there was a way, then I would say it would have to be deleting all of the un-used items on your computer and all of the un-necessary items that you have. In other words; make extra space on your hard drive. Of course, I am almost 100% sure that this would have no effect on the download speed.

Best of luck to you with your downloads.

I recommend you to install some download managers like Download Accelerator Plus or Flash get. These would help in improving your download speed by offering you resume services.

Your stuck -- With any program the fastest you could get it up to is not even worth downloading the program to do it.

If you live in a heavily populated area you could leech wireless, with a wireless card.
