Some people are born with some webbing between their fingers and toes. This could be considered a mutation. If neither of their parents or grandparents etc had it, then it could well be a novel mutation which has occurred in that particular person. If he is a good swimmer, and this is something which is admired in society, and has children who inherit this trait, and who are also good swimmers, then this could become established as a trait within the population.
