CA Child Labor ages 14 & 15 Must have completed 7th grade to work while school in session

Work permits
Except in limited circumstances defined in law and summarized in the child labor law booklet, all minors under 18 years of age employed in the state of California must have a permit to work.

Prior to permitting a minor to work, employers must possess a valid permit to employ and work. The permit to employ and work are issued on the same form. A permit to employ and work in industries other than entertainment is usually issued by an authorized person at the minor's school. During summer months or when school is not in session the work permit is obtained from the superintendent of the school district in which the minor resides.

School in session:
3 hours per school day outside of school hours 8 hours on any non-school day. 18 hours per week

School not in session :
8 hours per day 40 hours per week

Age Limit For Jobs

in most states a person is required to be at least 16 yrs of age to work in the main stream workforce, due to child labor laws. There are rare cases where a person 14 - 15 can get a job but it either has to be for a close relative or they must show cause for needing to work. Under 18 a person also usually needs proper paper work from their school and is limited to what hours they can work.

You need to be 15 with a work permit issued by your school. To legally work without a work permit, you just need to be 16. Although you may find some RARE places that hire at 14 and under the table.
