Is the ritual religious or secular needed in order for commitment to exist? Why do you think so? Is it a legal or a sky monster (god) thing?

Personally, I was raised in a Christian home, but rejected the religion when the higher reasoning skills of my adulthood kicked in. I also find law to be entirely arbitrary and while both law and religion have laid an interesting guideline out for life, neither are something to live by entirely. The marriage ritual has little meaning to me. The only argument I ever heard that made any sense was one that involved peer pressure and the need to make a commitment public, but again, I'm a tad antisocial, as in I make my own rules, and would love a reasonable answer.

I am getting married though because I can sacrifice a single day for my family's happiness. I don't see how it makes a commitment though, that's already made! Do tell if you can.

I think that you can be committed without marriage. The commitment starts long before the marriage takes place.

Sure I agree with you it is not necessary to have marriage for commitment. Marriage, for the most part, was thought up for religious reasons and then latched onto by the law. However, with divorce so easy to obtain and society no longer looking down on couples living together or single women having children marriage is falling by the wayside. I have been married and divorced, and in committed relationships. I did not feel because I was not married that I was any less committed then if I had been married. As you said I think most of the thing about marriage is created by the "sky monster". However, because of the way the laws are written there are some advantages to marriage from a legal standpoint, but with proper knowledge and planning most of these can be overcome. Like you, I think, most young women have had marriage driven into their brain since they were little girls, and so it can be nice to have a marriage ceremony for an initial marriage.

if you are only getting married to make your family happy, you still wont be making a commitment, because it not from your heart.
