I don't understand this. He looks he genuinely believed that he took hGH to heal the injury. But why did he take the illegal route?

Most legitimate physicians are not going to prescribe HGH for faster healing of an injury due to the long term effects. Individuals taking HGH are prone to serious health issues down the road such as cancer and liver problems.

If someone has a problem healing properly, HGH may be used. But no self respecting doctor is going to prescribe HGH just to help a player get back into the game faster. That is counter productive in the long run. Besides - HGH has never been approved by the FDA for healing injury or enhancing athletic performance. Doctors are going to seriously think about prescribing it for that purpose.

It is very likely that no punishment from MLB will be directed to Andy Pettitte. First let me say that HGH is legal in the United States by prescription only. From everything I am hearing now it appears Pettitte had a prescription for HGH and used it twice in 2002 to help recover from an arm injury. Although MLB implemented the drug testing program in 2002, HGH was not added to the banned substance list until 2005. So, at the time it was used by Pettitte there was
nothing in place by MLB saying he could not use it and since
he had a prescription it was legally in his possession.
Pettitte will only have a problem if added details surface contradicting the current situation.

Edit: I agree with vollyballchick that HGH is normally not prescribed by doctor's for injuries such as Pettitte had and I also question his motivation for using it. However, it can still be legally prescribed by a doctor and it was not banned by MLB at the time, so all I am saying is that from a legal point of view, and as far as MLB is concerned, he should not have a problem.
