From your brief description I would guess it is probably
an XJ 650 or 900.
If you take the prefix from the frame and engine numbers to a Yamaha Dealer, they should be able to tell you what model it is, or visit http://www.ingearind.com and give them the prefix's and they will be able to tell you what it is.
The prefix is usually One number and Two letters (frame and
engine may have different prefix's)
e.g. 4LO = RD350LC
Also to tell the age of your bike look on your wheel rims and your brake hoses, they will have a month and year date
stamp on them but maybe not the same as each other.
e.g. 08/86 = August 1986

I don't remember how to break it down, but the number you really want is the VIN. It's located on the frame neck.

Engine size, in cc is also cast into the engine block.
This will be found near the cylinder base.

There should be a serial number somewhere on the frame. Locat it and contact a Yammaha dealer and see if thy can decode it for you. Or post a link to a pic of the bike and we can be of more help.

you can check your registration from the DMV, it usually has the make/model and year on the registration papers
hope that helps.
