You own it. You can do whatever you want with it.
It voids your warranty though.

If at the store then yes because you opened on of there things. For example if a camera was in a box and you opened the box and turned on the camera that would be illegal. But if you bought the ipod then it's okay to turn it on because you bought it.

They don't make laws to protect any specific product like that. It would be silly when, in a few years, technology will change again and iPods may not exist as we know them.

The company will void your warranty if you open one. Opening it will kill it, and they will not pay to replace it.

you can do what ever you want to your ipod, but you will void any warrenty on it since you are tampering with it & you are not a "authorized dealer or repairer"
