Martin G has a good answer. Your internet provider probably offers a free antivirus package. If not, there are several good free ones available. Check cnet.com for reviews. Also, for spyware only, Yahoo Toolbar includes a great spyware tracker and remover. To prevent future issues, install Spyware blaster, which automatically blocks known spyware from being installed.

Spyware will not be detected in safe mode. So disconnect from the net and clean your PC. Try process explorer as well. It helps.

Install AVG antivirus, Spybot-Search&Destroy and WinPatrol on your system. AVG scans your computer for any virus infections , Spybot scans your system for any spywares, adwares and trojans. Apart form it also scans for any threat from installed softwares and repairs them. WinPatrol provides you with real time monitoring of your system and informs you of any problems or changes made to your system without your knowledge.
All these softwares are freewares and are lite on your system.
