im not sure if people just do this to make it not look so plain or if there is a real reason why we hang them on our tree's.

Because certain Christmas traditions are related to folk and pagan traditions related to the winter solstice and celebrations about the return of the light after the winter. The Roman holiday of Saturnalia (celebrated Dec 17) was celebrated by lighting and exchanging candles.

Ornaments are used to tell the story of Christmas. At least, they were initially. Candlelights were used to further tell the story in earlier times. Now, with electricity, thats no longer the case.

Because that's how they celebrated Christ's birth in biblical times, and we're just following tradition.

well cuz so that it can feel more like christmas so you can get into the christmas spirit
