This question is for mothers who have given birth, or who are pregnant, and have genital herpes. What are some of the risks you dealt with? My doc says if i have a break out while going into labor he will have to give me a csection, but i rather have a vaginal birth is at all possible. How did you get through it? Im so stressed about it!

For those of you who are asking why im so selfish, im not saying i want to have a vaginal delivery with an outbreak, im not stupid. What i meant was are there preventative measures to insure that its not passed onto my child. Stop being so rude. People come here for answers, not to be scolded into feeling like crap. Thank you to those of you with useful answers.

http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/herpes-risk-newborn.html
The overall risk of a newborn being born with or developing herpes is between 1 in 2,000 and 1 in 10,000 births. A woman who acquires herpes a short time before delivery is at much higher risk of passing it to her baby than if she was infected early in pregnancy or if she has a recurrence of her herpes at the time of delivery. This is probably because the quantity of virus is highest with a recent first infection. One study estimates the risk to the fetus to be almost 50 percent if the woman has her first herpes outbreak with an active lesion during delivery. In other words, the baby has a 1 in 2 chance of being infected in that circumstance. For women who have a recurrent outbreak and an active lesion at delivery, the risk is about 4 percent, or 1 chance in 25. If the woman is having a recurrence without noticeable symptoms (but still shedding the virus) the risk is less than 0.1 percent, or 1 chance in a 1,000.

I got diagnosed with herpes simplex virus (type 2) about seven yrs ago, while I was still attending college and had a mindless one-night stand. I know loads of young ladies will say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and all of a sudden it seemed like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date guys again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl who has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/xcgUr everything changed.
Not only was I able to eliminate all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to start dating once more. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so lucky to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a crowded cafe, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This system provided the opportunity to be happy and experience true love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.

There is no evidence that you are at a greater risk to pass the disease on to your child if you have a lesion at the time of delivery, but because people in America are sue happy, the doctors in this country will err on the side of caution and give you a c-section.
edit: I think with recurrent herpes, it's something like a 3% chance to pass the disease on to the child with or without a lesion.
Talk this over with your doctor. Do what you have to do to educate yourself about this. And remember, you aren't any less a mother or woman if you have to have a c-section.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

I do not have herpes, but a baby can die from a vaginal birth from a mother with herpes. I know that somebody said that their friend had vaginal birth because she had no visible outbreaks and the baby got herpes. That is because you can spread herpes even without a visible outbreak. Majority of people contract the STD when their partner has no visible lesions. So, do not have a vaginal birth, just get that out of your mind. Do not give your baby a potentially deadly virus, that they will have for the rest of their life, because of a very poor choice on your part.

I don't have herpes, but a friend of mine does and she had a vaginal delivery. She didn't have a visible outbreak, but her child developed an outbreak all over within a day or two of giving birth. And that poor baby looked so miserable.
If I were you, I'd opt for the c-section. I know you want a vaginal delivery, but your baby's health isn't worth it!

I know you would prefer to have a vaginal birth but you have to think about your unborn baby. It wouldn't be fair to him or her to give them disease without them doing anything to get it. They are so innocent. Don't stress about it so much. Just decide that you are going to right by your baby and not take any chances. I am sorry about your situation ok. Good luck and congrats.

Your doctor is right when he says you will need a caesarean section if you have a breakout of genital herpes when you are in labour. Why would you want to put your unborn child at risk because you want a normal delivery.
