Every time i feed my fish pellets, there is always a bad stench afterthe feeding that lasts for about 2-4 hours. I always check to see if there is any remaining food but its all gone. Am i able to stop the smell?

I feed them medium sized pellets and i randomly put about 10 pellets or more. I have a red oscar and two pacus.

I also was thinking that it might be the water that i put into it. I use regular tap water from my sink. Can that be the problem?

I doubt the smell is coming from the food. I would bet it's from opening the lid of your tank. Those fish are monsters and create a huge amount of waste. Try just opening up your lid and not feeding the fish. If it still smells bad you have some major water quality issues.

And just so you know, pacus are not cichlids. You should really do some research on them and their requirements. I just want you to be prepared for when they are fully grown.

How long since your last partial water change? You should be changing 30-40% of the water every week with oscars and pacus. They are both huge fish and will excrete large amounts of waste.

The smell is probably the water. Do a 40% water change and see if the smell improves. If not, wait about 3 days and do another 40%. Putting fresh activated carbon in the filter will help relieve the smell also.

Weekly partial water changes are the single most important thing you can do do keep your water quality high and your fish healthy.

Do you have gravel or sand in your cichlid tank? It is possible you have some anaerobic bacteria at work in your tank, and it may not be related to the feeding. Does it smell like the cichlid food? Hydrogen sulfide is a product of anaerobic bacteria, and it smells just, bad.
