Why wont the central locking on my 1998 subaru legacy estate stay locked?

my wife has taken the car from the UK to the French Alps for the winter and we have not had the problem before whereby it locks fine with the key but unlocks when the key returns vertical to be withdrawn and it would be great to fix it when I visit next weekend

Try locking the vehicle with a remote or try the other door. If it locks OK that way you have a bad sensor in the drivers door lock assembly.
