First, you must take charge of your life. Don't be a follower. What I mean is, lead your life the way you want to lead it. Make your goals, follow your own desires. Some people get caught up following the goals set up by their parents which may not coincide with their own goals. Sometimes this carries over into adult life. The other thing is be wary of who your friends are. Last year, I picked up everything and moved to another state, leaving all my friends and family behind. While I love my friends dearly, they were happy with their factory jobs and hanging out at the bar. I wanted more. I needed more in order to be happy. Frankly, my friends' lifestyles were holding me back. I needed more than a menial job and a life of living paycheck to paycheck. While they may have been happy with their lives, it didn't mean I had to live the same way. I made the move, and I still have my friends from back home. Since I made the move and began a new life, I've never been happier.
Set some goals. If you reach those, set more. Reward yourself for each goal reached. A year and a half ago, I could barely afford to by groceries for a week. Last month, after I rewarded myself for getting out of debt and maintaining a 3.8 GPA (despite being 38 years old, taking 15 credits and working full time), I purchased my first 42" LCD/HDTV. I set goals and achieved them. I took control of my life and am maintaining control. I've taken a couple lumps over the last years, but have a more positive attitude toward life because I realize I am in control of my destiny.
This is barely scratching the surface, but hopefully will give you something to think about.

Truth is... you already have a purpose in life.. you just need to find what it is that you were put on this earth for.. to be truly whole heartedly happy lies with inside you....doing for someone else.. or being someone that people look up to..it could be in your career... or in a family setting.. who knows.. it can be something so simple or it could be very complex... it will come to you in time.. it may not be what you really thought or wished it to be for you.. but each angel has a significat purpose.. and so do you..

Purpose in life is a meaningless question unless we assume that God exists. If you have a purpose for being on this earth, then that purpose has to have come from God.
As opposed to purpose, we can invent for ourselves reasons for living. If we reject God, we need to invent reasons for living so we won't think about suicide. A reason for living is intrinsically meaningless but we deceive ourselves into thinking that it is important enough to live for. It's an exercise in self deception. Self deceptions require constant reinforcement so we always have to keep vigilant and not think about such questions as yours.
If we accept that God might exist, then we find purpose (and true joy and peace) through seeking Him. If God exists, He must have put our intense need for purpose into our human nature to point us to seek Him.
